Greysheet Catalog Details (GSID: 3699)

The 1870 Three Cent Silver is part of a series of Three cent silver coins struck from 1859-1873. Struck in Philadelphia and designated as a Proof (PR) strike, this coin is made of 0.9 silver; 0.1 copper from a mintage of 1,000 struck.
With a higher mintage for the series, with 1,000 coins struck, this Proof Three Cent Silver Issue is a fantastic type coin. Common all the way through PR66 with just the finest gems in PR67 and PR68 being very rare as only a handful exist. Cameo pieces are far more difficult to locate in all grades and deep cameos are a rarity. Look for attractive toners as this series has many.
Obverse: A six-pointed star with a harp in the center is surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom. For the type III issues (1859-73) there is a single frame line around the star.
Reverse: The roman numeral III is centered in the design ensconced in a large, bejeweled letter C surrounded by 13 stars on the periphery. An olive sprig is added above the roman numerals.
