Greysheet Catalog Details (GSID: 5053)

The 1878 Twenty cents is part of a series of Seated Liberty twenty cent piece coins struck from 1875-1878. Struck in Philadelphia and designated as a Proof (PR) strike, this coin is made of 90% silver; 10% copper from a mintage of 600 struck.
The 1878 Twenty Cent Piece is a proof-only issue in this extremely short series that is highly desired by collectors. It has the second lowest mintage in the series at just 600. The date is scarce from the circulated grades all the way through PR66. The value escalates at a gradual pace up until the finest known grade of PR67, which is rare. The auction record for this date is a CAC approved NGC graded PR65, which brought $24,725 at a Stack's Bowers auction in 2011. As cameo and deep cameo pieces go there is an expected, yet subtle, premium. Only 133 have a Cameo designation from PCGS and NGC and only 5 exist in Deep Cameo. Deep Cameos are very rare across all Twenty Cent dates.
Obverse: Lady Liberty is seated on a rock, holding a staff, and bearing a shield with the word LIBERTY on a flowing ribbon. 13 stars have adorn the periphery and the date appears at the bottom center.
Reverse: An eagle is prominently featured with the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA * TWENTY CENTS around the periphery.

About CDN Prices

All CDN prices are based on proprietary market knowledge and technology developed by CDN Publishing, LLC.

CPG® prices represent retail levels. Collectors should refer to CPG values as a starting place for their negotiations, or auction bid reference.

Greysheet/Greensheet prices are wholesale market levels for collectible coins/paper money intended to indicate what a dealer, or wholesale, buyer would pay for the described item in the specified grade. Greysheet/Greensheet represent "sight-seen" values based on a buyer's in-hand review. The actual value can be more or less than this depending on factors including eye appeal and market timing.

Bluesheet (NGC & PCGS) prices represent the highest sight-unseen offers to buy on dealer networks like CDN Exchange. In many cases, there are no active sight-unseen buy offers, so CDN looks to the recent lowest market values for such an item. For this reason, Bluesheet values typically represent the floor of the market for the specified item. CDN only tracks Bluesheet on certain items.

CAC prices are for U.S. coins that meet the standards of the Certified Acceptance Corporation. You can learn more about CAC on their web site.
