The 1879 Pattern Twenty Dollars is part of a series of Pattern coins struck from . The specific variety is J-1643. Struck in Philadelphia and designated as a Proof (PR) strike, this coin is made of Gold from a mintage of 5 Known struck and has a rarity rating of 7.
Although they are patterns, the $4 gold “Stellas” of 1879 and 1880 (ranked together at No. 16) are very familiar to most collectors. The extremely popular coins are listed in the Guide Book of United States Coins (also known as the Red Book) and are highly sought after. Many collectors, however, are unaware of the $4 coin’s much rarer sibling, the Quintuple Stella.
Obverse: Liberty Head motif (designed by James B. Longacre) is surrounded by the legend *30*G*1.5*S*35*C*35*G*R*A*MS* with the date below.
Reverse: The reverse features a heraldic eagle bearing a shield on its breast and carrying an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Bracketing the eagle is a banner with the motto E PLURIBUS / UNUM; above, the legend DEO EST GLORIA is enclosed in an oval of 13 stars, with rays emanating above. Around the perimeter are the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS.
