Series Overview: $20 Saint Gaudens Gold (Proof)

Augustus Saint-Gaudens famously designed the $20 gold double eagle produced from 1907 through 1933, which countless numismatic scholars and art critics consider the most beautiful coin the United States ever issued. Circa 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned Saint-Gaudens to create designs for various denominations, but this massive project was realized only in part, as the sculptor was able to produce final designs for only the $10 eagle and $20 double eagle before dying from colon cancer in 1907.

The majority of the Saint-Gaudens double eagle series was made during years when the United States Mint did not produce proofs. Thankfully for the numismatic world, this exquisite series was produced in proof during the first several years of its existence, from 1907 through 1915. The most valuable proof Saint-Gaudens double eagle is, without question, the first-year issues from 1907. A few types of 1907 proof Saint-Gaudens double eagles exist and have at best only a handful of known specimens. However, the most valuable of these to cross the auction block is a 1907 Extremely High Relief $20 Lettered Edge graded PR69 by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS); this example took $2,820,000 at auction in 2012.

Other Saint-Gaudens proof double eagles from later in the series are significantly less expensive than the 1907 proofs but are nonetheless scarce. Mintages range from 50 to 167 pieces, and prices for typical matte specimens generally hover in the mid five figures, with some nicer examples realizing six-figure prices.
