Greysheet Catalog Details
Ratu Seru Epenisa Cakobau (Fijian: destroyer of Bau) was a ratu (ruler) and vunivalu (warlord) who united part of Fiji’s tribes, establishing a constitutional monarchy under his leadership (5 June 1871 - 10 October 1874), with Levuka as capital of the lands including all of modern Fiji, except the island of Rotuma.
The economy was poor, the government was in debt, and the Kingdom of Fiji Treasury (TRE) had difficulty maintaining an adequate supply of currency, then consisting of bills of exchange, checks drawn on colonial banks in Australia and New Zealand, and promissory notes from local traders, including Brewer & Joske (William H. O’Halloran Brewer and Paul Joske); Clarke, Spowart & Company; D. Levy & Sons; F. & W. Hennings; and J. C. Smith & Company.
Most of the treasury issues available on the collector market have been cancelled either with handstamps or handwritten lines through signatures and other design elements.
