With hyperinflation out of control, an emergency law of 15 October 1923 created a new currency, the rentenmark (mortgage mark), and its authorizing bank, the Rentenbank (REN). The currency was the idea of the economist Karl Helfferich and was backed by land used for agriculture and business. Rentenbank notes circulated in parallel with Reichsbank notes and others until 1948.
