During World War II, the territory of modern Serbia was divided between Bulgaria, Hungary, Independent State of Croatia, Italy, and the Italian protectorates of Albania and Montenegro, while the remaining part of Serbia was placed under German Military administration, with the Commissioner Government led by Milan Aćimović (replaced by the Government of National Salvation led by Milan Nedić on 29 August 1941).
On 29 May 1941, the German occupation authorities liquidated the National Bank of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and replaced it with the Српска Народна банка (Serbian National Bank, SNB) which issued notes for occupied Serbia.
