Heritage Auctions is holding a United States coin auction featuring more than 4,000 lots this week at their Dallas headquarters. The sale is anchored by a couple notable collections: the Dr. Pellegrini collection of silver dollars and the R. Thayer Sheets Yorktown collection.
The Dallas-based firm has been selling pieces of the Pellegrini collection since last year, starting with Bust and Liberty Seated dollars. The part of the collection offered this time includes 90 lots of Proof Like (PL) and Deep Mirror Proof Like (DMPL) Morgan dollars. Among of the featured highlights are an NGC MS63DPL 1889-CC; a PCGS MS64DMPL 1895-S; an NGC MS65DPL 1881; and a nicely toned NGC MS62DPL 1883-S. The Yorktown collection presents a broad spectrum of types from Colonials to gold, and is led by a solid grouping of Carson City coinage. Among this group is an 1870-CC $5 graded PCGS AU53, an 1879-CC $10 certified XF40 by PCGS, and a PCGS MS62 1893-CC double eagle. Any enthusiast of Carson City coinage should review the catalog.
A WORD ON THE ILLEGAL DISTRIBUTION (STEALING) OF GREYSHEETS
Many of our readers are honest subscribers who pay for their CDN subscriptions, however, there are a some out there who make extra copies for their employees, friends and other collectors. Not only is this activity illegal under copyright law, giving away the sheets hurts the hobby in numerous ways. For example, we were recently advised that an entire coin club was making copies from a single subscription for the entire membership. Dealers called us because a lot of “novice” collectors were running around the show trying to buy coins at “Greysheet” bid.
Giving away the Greysheet is no different than stealing a tv set from your friend’s house. As a subscriber, you are paying for your personal copy. If you want a friend to have it, please order a second subscription. If people continue to make illicit copies, we will have to charge more money for subscriptions-which none of us want to do. Also, if you know of anyone making copies for others, please let us know so we can contact that person. You can remain anonymous.
THIS WEEK’S MARKET
With the gold spot price being relatively flat over the past week, bids have been mostly stable, although there is again noticeable compression with narrow spreads between grades for many types. One bright spot is Gem Saints, with a higher sight bid for non-CAC examples this week.
Price updates can be found towards the later dates of the series this week. Readers with an interest in Carson City GSA silver dollars are encouraged to read this week’s Bluesheet for an update on this market. A reminder that every article from all of our publications can be read for free at blog.greysheet.com.
