Canada: Second Incredible UHR Silver Coin In Great Hunters Series Features The Cougar

The Great Hunters series serves as a commanding example of the unconquerable and often elusive nature of Canada’s wilderness. The latest coins feature the cougar, also known as panthers, mountain lions and pumas, these large cats are native to the Americas. They inhabit North, Central and South America which makes them the most widely distributed wild, terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere, and one of the most widespread in the world, though in very small numbers. Canada’s largest wild cat includes four subspecies of cougars living across the country, though the majority of the cougar population is located in British Columbia and Alberta. They play an important role in their respective eco-systems as they feed on mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, moose calves, coyotes, beavers and even mice. A cougar will quietly stalk its prey, relying on cover to ambush, crouching and creeping and concealing itself in foliage as it closes in before swiftly pouncing and delivering a fatal prolonged bite. Its intended meal will rarely see or hear a cougar’s approach until it’s too late. Guided by its senses and gifted with both speed and agility, cougars do not need to put on an amazing display of strength during the hunt. But rather, these cunning predators can hunt from dusk until dawn, and once it has eaten its fill, cougars will hide any remains and save them for another feeding, their adept hunting abilities unmatched by few species of wildlife.

The reverse design is shared on both gold and silver options and is the work of artist Emily Damstra who brings the viewer face-to-face with a cougar or, Puma concolor in the Canadian wilderness. The quietly stalking cougar is steady on its feet, its big paws padding and silencing its approach as it creeps down a rocky slope strewn with fallen leaves from the surrounding trembling aspen trees. The obverse features the effigy of HM King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati. Surrounding the King’s portrait is the legend CHARLES III CANADA 2024 D · G · REX with the denomination 200 DOLLARS (gold) or 20 DOLLARS (silver) placed below the King’s likeness.
