King Felipe VI succeeded to the Spanish throne on the 19th June 2014 after his predecessor and father King Juan Carlos announced his intention to abdicate on the 2nd June after a 38 year reign. A ceremony which included the former King signing his abdication on the day as well as the proclamation of the new King was held the day after and televised to the nation in the presence of the former King and the Cortes – Spain’s parliament. Spanish monarchs are not crowned but rather, they take part in an investiture ceremony which comprises a swearing in and administering of an oath of allegiance to the constitution. The oath is administered by the Speaker of the Cortes in the presence of deputies and a full sitting of members of the Cortes.

King Felipe VI married the former Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, an award-winning television journalist in 2004, who became Queen consort on the day of her husband’s proclamation. The couple’s first child, a daughter named Leonor was born in 2005 with the couple’s second child, Sofia born in 2007. With the accession of Felipe as King, Princess Leonor was given the title Princess of the Asturias, a title reserved for the Spanish crown’s heir and as such is first in the order of succession to the Spanish throne. Princess Leonore celebrated her 18th birthday in 2023 and is currently training at the General Military Academy in Zaragoza as part of a three-year program that will prepare her to become Spain's commander-in-chief.

10 Euro – Silver. The reverse side features an off-set image of the Royal Coat of Arms which has colour applied to the relief. The legend X ANIVERSARIO DE LA PROCLAMACIÓN (10th anniversary of the proclamation) is placed along the rim towards the left of the crest. The denomination 10 EURO is also shown to the left of the crest. The obverse side features the dual effigies of Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia facing left. Above their profiles is the text FELIPE VI Y LETIZIA with the additional text ESPAÑA and the year 2024 placed below the royal couple’s likeness.

50 Euro – Silver. The reverse side includes intricately detailed images of the main facades of both the Palace of the Congress of Deputies where the King was invested as monarch and the Royal Palace of Zarzuela, home of the Royal family located in Madrid.  The legend X ANIVERSARIO DE LA PROCLAMACIÓN (10th anniversary of the proclamation) is placed along the rim above the primary design with the denomination 50 EURO shown just above the image of the Congress of deputies. A small version of the royal crest is superimposed over the Palace of Zarzuela and near the right rim. The obverse side features a family portrait of the Royal family with the King and Queen standing alongside their two daughters, the Infanta Sofia and Princess Leonore at the Royal Palace of Zarzuela. The picture was taken on the 31st October 2023 for the 18th birthday of The Princess of the Asturias. In the background is a banner of the Spanish flag with the text ESPAÑA and the year 2024 placed along the upper rim towards the right side.

200 Euro – Gold. The reverse side features an off-centre image of the Corona Tumular which has been used as part of investitures for a number of Spanish monarchs since 1808. Since July 2014, the corona tumular and sceptre have been on permanent public display for the first time ever in the Crown Room at the Royal Palace of Madrid. To the left of the crown along the rim is the commemorative inscription X ANIVERSARIO DE LA PROCLAMACIÓN (10th anniversary of the proclamation) with the denomination 200 EURO shown just to the upper left of the crown. The obverse side includes the current effigy of HM King Felipe VI facing left and is the work of engraver Luis Jose Diaz Salas. Above the King’s likeness is the legend FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA with the year 2024 place below the portrait.
