The fearsome battle between St George and the dragon makes a dramatic entrance on a new bullion coin range. Dating from around the eleventh century, the tale of St George and the dragon has been visited many times in texts and in art, with the legend inspiring some of the world’s finest artists. It has proved an enduring theme for coin designs, with Benedetto Pistrucci’s interpretation on the reverse of gold Sovereign coins from 1817 and intermittent silver crown coins is perhaps the most celebrated and well known.

The reverse design by engraver Jody Clark features a dynamic depiction of the fight between good and evil, with St George driving his lance into the body of the beast lurking below his rearing horse. This particular design first appeared in 2018 which was released as a commemorative £5 crown coin minted in gold and silver proof quality in honour of the fifth birthday of His Royal Highness, Prince George, eldest son of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Below the primary design is the year of issue, 2024. As a security measure, each coin includes a border along the rim consisting of micro-text denoting the metal, fineness, year and weight. The obverse depicts an effigy of HM King Charles III, designed by acclaimed sculptor Martin Jennings. The denomination 2 POUNDS to 500 POUNDS is part of the legend surrounding the King’s likeness. Both the reverse and obverse also benefits from a background of surface animation providing a security measure and an eye-appealing look when the coin is tilted under a source of light.
