United Kingdom: Popular Children’s Story The Gruffalo’s Child Features On New Gold And Silver Collector Coins
The Royal Mint have released a new range of collector coins featuring a favourite Children’s story.
The Gruffalo’s Child was an instant classic that has become one of the most popular children’s books of the twenty first century. As the book reaches the 20th anniversary since publication, this timeless tale is featured on British coins for the first time. Written by Julia Donaldson in her recognisable rhyming verse and beautifully illustrated by Axel Scheffler, The Gruffalo’s Child is a firm favourite in the world of children’s literature that has not only entertained families for two decades but provided children and parents alike, an enjoyable read. The new collector coin range follows on from the Royal Mint’s popular coin which celebrated the world’s most loved woodland monster, the Gruffalo released in 2019.
Following on from Donaldson’s earlier tale, The Gruffalo’s Child sequel follows the adventure of the Gruffalo’s daughter as she goes in search of the Big Bad Mouse that her dad warned her about. Along the way she is greeted by three different animals such as a snake with a long tail, an owl with big bright eyes and a fox with long whiskers. Once again the mouse comes out on top with his fast thinking and trickery.
The reverse side of the coins features an original illustration by Axel Sheffler of the brave Gruffalo’s Child in the wintery setting of the deep dark wood, alongside the quick-thinking little Mouse. Above the primary design is the text THE GRUFFALO’S CHILD shown in the style as the original logo. The obverse of each coin option features the definitive effigy of HM King Charles III designed by Martin Jennings. The denomination from 50 PENCE and year of issue 2024 also appears on the obverse as part of the legend surrounding the King’s likeness.
