Wonderful Collection of Charlotte Mint $5s Highlights July Auction
Not everyone realizes that Georgia and North Carolina once had their own short-lived mints that produced coins for circulation. The Charlotte, NC and Dahlonega, GA mints were only in operation for a fairly short period of time and were created to capitalize on the new discovery of gold in the South, turning raw metal into coins for commerce!
Not everyone realizes that Georgia and North Carolina once had their own
short-lived mints that produced coins for circulation. The Charlotte, NC
and Dahlonega, GA mints were only in operation for a fairly short period of
time and were created to capitalize on the new discovery of gold in the
South, turning raw metal into coins for commerce! Between generally low
mintages and also the fact that these mints only stuck around as
operational facilities for a relatively brief time, C and D mint gold is
scarce and popular with collectors today. If you combine that with the fact
that these mints are famous for having been taken over by the Confederacy
during the Civil War, then you really have a recipe for hot collector's
items!
Having a few pieces of Charlotte or Dahlonega gold coins in any auction is
news enough, but Heritage will be offering a rarely-seen selection of $5
gold pieces all minted at the Charlotte Mint in upcoming US Coin July sale
1332. If you are building a Southern or C-mint date set, look no further!
