Dealers head to Orlando for last big event prior to ANA World’s Fair of Money

The summer months are typically slower in the coin business and dealers usually embrace the slow-down to take advantage and schedule fewer events in the months of July through September, with the exception of the ANA World’s Fair of Money show. One exception is the Summer FUN convention, held in Orlando, Florida, occurring this week (link).

The Florida United Numismatists, or FUN, added this summer event to the calendar about a decade ago to fill the void, but dealers and collectors have yet to fully embrace this show. The directory shows over 100 dealers with booths and Heritage Auctions anchors the show with a live auction (link). The highlight of their auction is the famous 1943 cent, struck in error on a copper planchet, graded PCGS XF45 (link).

As of this writing, bidding is currently at $120,000 ($144,000 with buyer’s premium) for the lot. CDN pricing on this coin is $165,000 Greysheet (wholesale) and $181,500 CPG (retail).

I expect this coin will see a bit more bidding before all is said and done. Of course, we will be watching the results carefully to see where the final bids land.
