Greysheet: GEM 1909-O FIVE REALIZES OVER HALF A MILLION DOLLARS IN GOLDBERG

by CDN Publishing | Published on June 14, 2016

1933 TEN RINGS IN AT $881,250!
A stunning gem 1909-O $5 Indian graded PCGS/CAC MS65 has realized $517,000 (with 17.5% buyer’s premium) at the recent Goldberg Auctions sale on June 6. The offering was one of a select group of superb-quality gold pieces billed as the Midwestern Family Collection. These coins were are recently graded at PCGS for the first time and completely fresh to the marketplace, adding to their desirability. The 1933 $10 Indian, graded PCGS/CAC MS66, rang in at nearly $1 million. Both coins make a clear indication that the current U.S. rare coin market is healthy while not overexuberant. CDN Monthly Supplement had a value indication of $450,000 for the 1909-O which is consistent with the hammer price of $440,000 struck down for the coin. The 1933 $10 was listed with a wholesale bid of $575,000 in MS65 so $750,000 hammer for this coin is perfectly in line with our expectations for a top-quality example for the grade. In a more heated market, these coins could have brought another 10-20% posing some risk to the buyers. At these levels, the new owner(s) are in a great position.

All in all the Goldberg result adds to our confidence that the market is healthy and buyers should feel good about short-term levels and long-term potential.
