Own a Piece of History From Paul Revere
As the famous poet Wadsworth wrote, "Listen my children and you shall hear Of the midnight ride of Paul Revere On the eighteenth of April, in Seventy-five; Hardly a man is now alive Who remembers that famous day and year..."
Paul Revere is one of the famous figures of the American revolutionary war and is remembered today by historians and collectors alike. How would you like to own a piece of history engraved and printed by the man himself?
Heritage Auctions will be offering a wonderful piece of history in the form of a colonial paper money note engraved and printed by Paul Revere as part of the Mike Coltrane Collection Auction #3575. Dated December 7, 1775, this 42 Shillings note has been authenticated by PMG and graded as Very Fine 20 Net. Known as the "Sword in Hand" notes due to the jaunty militiaman on the reverse side, holding a sword, these notes are perennially popular with collectors today.
In a letter that Revere had written to the Massachusetts House of Representatives on December 8, 1775, he said that he would, "Engrave the Plates & make the necessary alterations in the same ... As the alteration & engraving will not be quite so much work as the last [referring to the first Sword in Hand emission of August 18], I agree to alow [sic] thirty Shillings L. [Lawful] Money out of the whole."
The legislature agreed, and production of these bills went ahead (much to the joy of collectors today for the few that survived!). Revere was given permission to begin his work, and the House agreed to pay him 1 1/2 Cents for every bill that he printed: "And that he be allowed for said Service One Penny and a Half Penny O.T. [Old Tenor] for each Bill he shall strike off, he finding the Paper, and every Material that shall be necessary, and allowing a deduction to be made from the forgoing Allowance of the Sum of Thirty Shillings Lawful-Money for the Advantage he will receive from the old Plates ..." [House Journal, p. 28]." With an estimate of $2,000 to $3,000, this note offers history and charm in spades at a budget that many collectors can afford.
