Catalog Notes for 1936 Norfolk 50c MS: The 1936 Norfolk commemorative half dollar recognizes the Virginia city’s graduation from a village to a full borough in 1736. More than 25,000 were distributed, with examples selling for $1.50 each, or $1.65 ordered by mail. The coin, designed by husband-and-wife artistic duo William Marks Simpson and Marjorie Emory Simpson, features a sailing ship on the obverse and a royal scepter on the reverse.

This coin has an incredible amount of occupied real estate, with both surfaces covered in various inscriptions and device elements. This helps reduce the number of visible marks on these coins, and thus the vast majority are known at the Gem level. It’s easily one of the most readily available classic commemoratives at that level of preservation and is frequently encountered in grades of MS67. Even MS68s can be found with a bit of searching. However, MS69s are extremely rare. Most examples exhibit remarkably great strike and luster.

About CDN Prices:
CPG® prices represent retail levels. Collectors should refer to CPG values as a starting place for their negotiations, or auction bid reference.
Greysheet/Greensheet prices are wholesale market levels for collectible coins/paper money intended to indicate what a dealer, or wholesale, buyer would pay for the described item in the specified grade. Greysheet/Greensheet represent "sight-seen" values based on a buyer's in-hand review. The actual value can be more or less than this depending on factors including eye appeal and market timing.
Bluesheet (NGC & PCGS) prices represent the highest sight-unseen offers to buy on dealer networks like CDN Exchange. In many cases, there are no active sight-unseen buy offers, so CDN looks to the recent lowest market values for such an item. For this reason, Bluesheet values typically represent the floor of the market for the specified item. CDN only tracks Bluesheet on certain items.
CAC prices are for U.S. coins that meet the standards of the Certified Acceptance Corporation. You can learn more about CAC on their web site.
