Featured Greysheet Pricing for June: Capped Bust Half Dollars by Overton Die Variety

They are named for Al C. Overton, the researcher and numismatist who first published the standard reference work on the subject.

This month’s featured pricing consists of selected die varieties of Capped Bust half dollars, known as Overton varieties. Overton identified the many obverse and reverse dies used by the Mint for each year of early half dollars, including the Flowing Hair and Draped Bust types.

The die varieties were also assigned rarity ratings, and these ratings have been updated over time and more and more of these coins have been attributed. A number of collectors have attempted to build a complete Overton variety set, which is a monumental task that requires patience and deep resources. The coins listed here are among the Overton varieties which have the highest rarity ratings. Greysheet maintains pricing for the entire Overton series.
