On nine occasions in the 20th century, the Denver Mint produced fewer than one million coins in a certain year and denomination.
Moffat & Company’s coins were intended to mimic the design of U.S. gold coins, with the word “LIBERTY” replaced by “MOFFAT & Co.” on Liberty’s diadem, and the legend “S.M.V CALIFORNIA GOLD.” on the reverse. There are several minor positional varieties of the reverse die known, and examples can be found from heavily circulated grades on up to gem uncirculated.
Obverse Description
Liberty Head with MOFFAT & Co on diadem 1849 thirteen stars around.
Reverse Description
Federal Eagle S.M.V. CALIFORNIA GOLD FIVE DOL.
