Proof-like surfaces. The scarcest type 1 Three Cent Silver and the only issue with a mintmark. The New Orleans Mint produced just 720,000 of them, which is the lowest for the type. Tough to find in any grade with scarcity beginning at MS63. MS63's and 64's are not too difficult to locate; but, gems certainly are. The finest gems are quite rare. Look for attractive toning and premium luster.

Obverse Description

A six-pointed star with a harp in the center is surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the periphery and the date positioned at the bottom. For the type I issues (1851-53) there is no frame line around the star.

Reverse Description

The roman numeral III is centered in the design ensconced in a large, bejeweled letter C surrounded by 13 stars on the periphery. The mint mark appears to the right of the roman numerals where the letter C is closing.
