Newly discovered 1867-S Half Eagle also shatters previous auction record in $10.665 million U.S. coins event; 1934 $10,000 Federal Reserve Note Leads $8.7 million U.S. currency auction.
The 1888 GSA Morgan dollar is a rarity in that very few non-CC Morgan dollars were offered in the Great Silver Sale of the 1970s and early 1980s. It therefore makes sense that 1888 GSA Morgan dollars command significant premiums on the occasion they're sold, generally taking higher prices in GSA plastic than a regular raw or certified 1888 Morgan dollar in similar condition.
