In early September, the U.S. Mint began selling bags and rolls of Semiquincentennial one-dollar coins.
While the 1942/1 Mercury dime is relatively common in circulated grades and somewhat scarce with ordinary strike details in Mint State grades, this becomes an extremely rare variety with Full Bands details. Fewer than 100 Full Bands examples are thought to exist across all Mint State grades, and only two or three dozen are known in grades of MS65 or better. In 2010, one collector paid $63,250 for the opportunity to own one graded MS66FB by PCGS.
Obverse Description
Winged Liberty, or Mercury (the Roman god of commerce), is depicted facing left with LIBERTY spelled around the periphery. IN GOD WE TRUST appears left of the neck and the date is positioned just below the bust around 5 o'clock. The designer's initials "AW" appear to the right of the neck.
Reverse Description
A large torch is centered vertically adorned with an axe head and olive branches. UNITED STATES OF AMERICAN * ONE DIME * is spelled out around the periphery. Mint mark, if any, appears near the bottom rim left of the torch.
