World and Ancient Coins Scintillate at Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction

These results demonstrate the strength of the global numismatic marketplace, in addition to Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ role as a preeminent auction firm for numismatic rarities.

Session A began with a phenomenal selection of the coins of Spain, Portugal, and Latin America, with some astounding prices realized in this session. A countermarked Curaçaoan 180 Reaals upon a Brazilian 12,800 Reis garnered $390,400, making it one of the most valuable Dutch or Dutch Colonial coins to ever sell at public auction. Lot 40028 offered an exquisite 4 Escudos from 1607 struck at Segovia; graded MS-62 by NGC, it sold for $189,100. (All prices include the buyer’s fee.)

Session B began with ancient coins, with lot 41163, an Octavian & Julius Caesar Aureus, reaching $158,600.  A Caligula Aureus offered as lot 41175 was bid to $97,600, far surpassing the high estimate of $60,000. Ancient Greek coinage also impressed as a particularly choice Lydian Heavy Stater from the reign of Kroisos, lot 41089, realized $91,500.

After the ancient coins, Session B continued with some truly exciting treasures from the British Isles. Lot 41495, a stunningly toned NGC PROOF-64★ Cameo “Gothic” Crown dazzled its way to a price of $134,200. An always popular Royal African Company 5 Guineas of Charles II graded MS-62 by PCGS realized $158,600, and a MS-61 example of the in-demand “Lima” 5 Guineas from 1746 sold for $73,200.

Session C featured world types not offered in the first two sessions, highlighted by four Russian rarities from the Charles “Cheech” Litman Collection. Chief among them was lot 42718, a Gold 5 Ruses (1/3 Imperial) Pattern from 1895 graded by NGC as Proof-64 Cameo. This loftiest of Russian rarities realized $1,159,000, the highest priced world or ancient coin offered by any of the official ANA auctions and highlighted the staggering interest in the coinage of Nicholas II. Lot 42717, a 10 Rubles, brought $268,400, while lot 42719, the ever-popular 1902 37-½ Rubles, here graded MS-61 by NGC, sold for $268,400.

Other areas also showed considerable strength, with the Philippines performing very well, as highlighted by lot 42636, an incredibly rare 1830 Manila Overstrike 8 Reales on an Argentinian host which sold for $91,500. European rarities included a 1990 Albania 10 Leke Essai that garnered $85,400 against a high estimate of $30,000. Indian and Islamic coins both fared well with a rare Acre Dinar from the Fatimid Caliphate reaching $51,240 in lot 42516, and a nearly unheard-of Quarter Rupee of Nur Jahan selling for $34,160 in lot 42447.

These strong realizations highlight Stack’s Bowers Galleries’ status as the premier auction destination for world and ancient coins.
