New coins from Austria, Hungary, and the United Kingdom.
On the centenary of the death of Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (Valencia, 1863 – Cercedilla, 1923), the Royal Spanish Mint honors the Spanish painter of greatest international reach of his time and master of «luminism», with three coins reproducing works kept at the Museo Sorolla in Madrid.
Sorolla’s fame crossed the Atlantic with his 1909 exhibition in New York, followed in 1911 by shows in St. Louis and Chicago and the commission from the Hispanic Society of America for fourteen murals on the regions of Spain. The program comprises a gold 4 escudos, a Cincuentín and a square 1 oz coin — both silver pieces in color — struck in proof quality.
Obverse Description
“Autorretrato” (Self-Portrait), painted by Sorolla in 1909 and kept at the Museo Sorolla, Madrid.
Reverse Description
“Clotilde con traje gris” (Clotilde in a Gray Suit), 1900, also at the Museo Sorolla: of all his portraits of his wife Clotilde, perhaps the most amiable and smiling.
