Prior to the establishment of the Commercial and Industrial Bank (CIB) on 2 June 1924, the country lacked its own currency and instead used livestock, pressed tea, and other commodities, including bars of silver. Banknotes of China, Great Britain, Japan, Russia, and the United States circulated unofficially throughout the country.
