Greysheet: MARKET SURPRISINGLY STEADY IN APRIL

by CDN Publishing | Published on May 3, 2016

The month of April typically presents challenges for coin dealers as collectors lay low during tax month. In some years, the drop off in sales can be precipitous, but this year it appears that the trend of cautious growth of the coin business has continued, despite the annual challenge of fending off the tax man.

As we go to press, the Central States show is getting underway, so we will offer a more comprehensive report of the show and associated Heritage Auction in next week’s Greysheet.

THIS WEEKS MARKET
This week we cover the May Monthly Supplement & Quarterly II editions, both published separately and included with the Greysheet subscription.

GREYSHEET
Gold Type: Market makers continue to be bullish on generic gold, especially at the MS63 and MS64 levels. Gem Saints are now bid at $1,940, while Very Choice $5 Libs inch up to $815.
Modern Commems: We have added the newly-released god Mercury dime to our Modern Commemoratives chart on page 5. Readers will find this and the two future gold coin releases under the heading “Centennial Gold” heading.
Modern Dollars: Higher bids are seen for a handful of Presidential dollars dated 2013 and 2014 this week, and we have added additional listings for the 2015 issues.
Mercury Dimes: Nearly 100% positive movement in this series, with strength at the Gem Full Bands level.
Walking Liberty Halves: Some adjustments are made in the later dates in circulated grades. Look for additional changes to circulated Walkers in this month’s Supplement.

MONTHLY SUPPLEMENT
Indian Cents: Quite a few gainers this month for high grade examples of pre-1890 issues with red-brown surfaces.
Proof Morgans: Proof-63 coins are up across the board as prices for nice examples closes in on Proof-64 coins.

QUARTERLY II
Bust & Seated Half Dollars: We have performed an exhaustive review of these series with updated pricing on nearly every issue – the majority are now higher.
Trade Dollars: Common date type coins suffered recently in high grade while Carson City issues are strong across nearly all dates and grades.
Quarter Eagles: We have performed an exhaustive review of this series with updated pricing on nearly every issue. Many levels are now higher, but a good number of listings have been lowered so careful study of the new levels is highly recommended.
