The manufacture of the multiple d'Or in modules of 8 or 10 louis by Jean Warin is known by two documents from the National Archives, published and analyzed by Fernand Arbez and Christian Charlet, A gold medal of 100 pounds, bearing the effigy of Louis XIII, stolen and returned to Jean Warin in 1641, BSFN, March 2014, p.66-70. Multiples of 54 g or 67.5 g louis have been described as 8 and 10 louis d'or coins since Hoffmann's work in 1878, and taken up as such by Ciani in 1926, Duplessy in 1989 and 1999, Droulers in different editions, etc. However, for F. Leblanc in 1690, these copies were reported as pleasure pieces. More recently, J. Lafaurie and P. Prieur, in the unpublished volume 3 of their work, the currencies of the kings of France, consider these specimens as tests of types not adopted. Subsequently, the archival texts published by Arbez and Charlet first of all confirm the date of these tests which are indeed by Jean Warin in 1640. These tests of monetary manufactures remained however without legal tender. We will adopt their classification with the denomination Essai de 8 (or 10) louis d’or.

After the Civil War ended with the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell became Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England. Seven years later, tests were carried out with a portrait of Oliver Cromwell as a king, laureate on the left and the royal crown on the reverse, by an engraving by Thomas Simon. The minting is carried out at the monetary press by Pierre Blondeau. The care taken denotes great mastery throughout the production chain.

By Jean and Joseph Roettiers. In January 1662, Thomas Simon, under the direction of Rawlins who had returned to grace with the Restoration of 1660, received instructions to create dies for the new coinage at the mill. Arrive from Antwerp, at the same period, the Roëttiers brothers who propose to also engrave dies, highlighting the portrait of the King on the one hand, and on the other hand to strike with the inscribed edge. Our Gold strike, on the crown module, with an undraped bust (from a drawing by Samuel Cooper), is a test intended for the King and his entourage (Gold Royal Set). Both the engraving and the striking of our copy are of very high quality, as is the essay by Thomas Simon (Petition crown). However, the engraving of the latter was not retained and in May 1662 Jean Roëttiers was assigned a post of engraver at the Mint jointly with Rawlins, he would be chief engraver from 1670. The technical quality of Roëttiers' dies will be worth to them the attribution of the engraving of the dies for the mechanical coinage. The bust chosen for the striking of the silver crown (crown) will be draped as on the test of the gold crown, dated 1663 (W& R.51 - cf. Heritage 3071 n° 34220).

Designed by William Wyon (1795-1851) in 1839 to commemorate the start of Victoria's reign (in 1837), the 5 pound coin “Una and the lion” is recognized as one of the finest British coins. Victoria, accompanied by a lion, advances on the left, with the motto “May God direct my steps”. The then 20-year-old queen is depicted as Lady Una, after a character in Edmund Spencer's 1590 poem The Faerie Queene. This bold design is the first depiction of a British monarch in the form of a fictional character: the lion representing England is ruled by Queen Victoria, as Una, who guides it with her scepter.
