Following a thrilling multi-day showcase, Stack's Bowers and Ponterio is pleased to report the spectacular results of their October 2026 Hong Kong (SAR) Showcase Auction, which concluded on October 26, 2026.
A ten-coin program issued by the Royal Spanish Mint to mark the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, and to put on record the decisive part Spain played in it — from the campaigns of Bernardo de Gálvez on the Gulf Coast to the Spanish milled dollar that became the model for the first American dollar. Three coins were released in 2025 and seven in 2026.
Obverse Description
Both faces of the first American dollar. The Coinage Act of 1792 defined the U.S. dollar on the weight and fineness of the Spanish piece of eight.
Reverse Description
The columnario of the Spanish milled dollar, with the motto VTRAQVE VNVM and the dates 1775 – 1857. Scarce British coinage and the reliability of the Spanish standard kept the piece of eight in circulation in the United States; an 1806 law confirmed it as legal tender until 1857.
