About British West Africa

Beware that forgeries with simulated watermarks and without intaglio printing are somewhat common, especially on earlier dates. One easy way to spot a fake on notes from 1916 to 1951 is if the control digit in the prefix is not one number higher than the left-most digit in the serial number. For example, in the image shown for B101a, the denominator in the prefix (4) is precisely one number higher than the left-most digit (3) in the serial number, which means the note is likely, but not certainly, genuine.
