The Belgian Congo gained independence on 30 June 1960 and became the République du Congo. The Conseil Monétaire de la République du Congo (Monetary Council of the Republic of Congo, CMRC) was established on 3 October 1960. Its primary mission was to design proposals for the creation of a central bank and the organization of a banking system. The council ceased operations on 22 June 1964. During its four years of operation, the council issued three notes.
Under the leadership of Moise Tshombe, Katanga broke away from Patrice Lumumba’s newly independent Democratic Republic of the Congo on 11 July 1960. For notes issued by Tshombe’s regime, see Katanga.
