About This Series

The Greysheet Catalog (GSID) of the National Gold Bank Notes series of Large Size National Bank Notes in the U.S. Currency contains 46 distinct entries with CPG® values between $2,500.00 and $450,000.00.
National gold bank notes were issued during the 1870s and 1880s by 10 national gold banks, with nine of these in California and one in Boston, Massachusetts. They were printed on yellow-tinted paper in the denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, and $500. $1,000 notes were designed and printed but never issued.

In all, just over 200,000 national gold bank notes were printed. However, they are quite rare today, and this is especially so for examples in higher denominations, with a little more than 600 examples known across all denominations and perhaps 20 grading higher than Very Fine. Crisp new national gold bank notes are essentially unheard of.
