Series notes: $2.50 Liberty Gold (Proof)

Proof Liberty Head $2.50 gold coins were struck for the duration of the series, from 1840 through 1907. However, virtually all proof Liberty Head $2.50 gold coins made from 1840 through the late 1850s are exceedingly scarce, and thus are not often encountered in the marketplace. Later dates, especially those since the 1880s, are more relatively common, with those from the 1890s and 1900s serving as the most common issues in terms of mintages.

Proof Liberty Head quarter eagles are generally traded among 19th-century type enthusiasts, though completing an entire run of proof $2.50 gold coins is a monumental challenge. Even the more ?common? proof issues were struck in the range of 100 to 200 pieces, with the highest mintage registering at 223 pieces (1901). Therefore, even for those with the financial means, locating each issue can be extremely difficult. Cameo specimens are scarce, and deep cameos are quite rare.
