Enormous Gold Coin Certified by NGC Leads Part 5 of SINCONA British Collection Auctions

An impressive modern rarity with 5 kilograms of gold is among over 500 coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are part of an upcoming SINCONA auction.

SARASOTA, Fla. (October 20, 2023) — An impressive modern rarity with 5 kilograms of gold is among over 500 coins certified by Numismatic Guaranty Company® (NGC®) that are part of an upcoming SINCONA auction. Bidding is already underway for SINCONA Auction 86 , the fifth and final part of the SINCONA British Collection, which will be held on October 24, 2023.

The auction's top highlight is a Great Britain 2019 5 Kilogram Gold £5,000 Una and the Lion graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo (lot 1845), which has a starting price of 350,000 CHF (about $385,000). This unique coin helped inaugurate a new series from The Royal Mint that celebrated "The Great Engravers" and their work that has graced British coinage for centuries. This coin shows Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and the venerable "Una and the Lion" design on the reverse. This timeless work of William Wyon was first issued in 1839 on a 5 Sovereign coin that celebrated the young Queen Victoria.

Another amazing modern rarity in the auction is a Great Britain 2013 1 Kilogram Gold £1,000 - Queen Elizabeth II, 60th Anniversary of Coronation graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo (lot 1808). This coin celebrates the Diamond Jubilee of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II and is one of only 13 pieces struck. One of nine coins in the auction containing at least a kilogram of gold, it has a starting price of 50,000 CHF (about $55,000).

The SINCONA British Collection is an extraordinary group of rarities that represent the history of English coinage over nearly 700 years, starting with King Edward III in the 14th century. The first auction, held in November 2021, included a 15-coin Proof set that realized CHF 528,000 (about $568,000). Among that set was an 1839 Una and the Lion 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 63 Ultra Cameo, the finest of three such coins in the collection. Top highlights from the subsequent auctions included an England 1658 Gold Pattern Half Crown graded NGC PF 63 Cameo that realized CHF 312,000 (about $311,000); an England 1643 Triple Unite graded NGC MS 63 that realized CHF 312,000 (about $312,000); and a Great Britain 1820 Gold Pattern 5 Sovereign graded NGC PF 64★ Ultra Cameo that realized 552,000 CHF (about $616,000).

Through the first four auctions, 45 coins from the SINCONA British Collection have realized prices over $100,000 in auctions that started in November 2021.

  • an Alderney 2011 1 Kilogram Gold £1,000 - William & Catherine Royal Wedding graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo (lot 1798), with a starting price of 50,000 CHF (about $55,000)
  • an Alderney 2009 1 Kilogram Gold £1,000 - Henry VIII, 500th Anniversary of Birth graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo (lot 1789), with a starting price of 50,000 CHF (about $55,000)
  • an Alderney 2008 1 Kilogram Gold £1,000 - Concorde Retirement, 5th Anniversary graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo (lot 1781), with a starting price of 50,000 CHF (about $55,000)
  • an Alderney 2008 1 Kilogram Gold £1,000 - Charles III, 60th Anniversary of Birth graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo (lot 1780), with a starting price of 50,000 CHF (about $55,000)
  • an Alderney 2006 1 Kilogram Gold £1,000 - Queen Elizabeth II, 80th Anniversary of Birth graded NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo (lot 1764), with a starting price of 50,000 CHF (about $55,000)
  • a Great Britain 2017 Gold £800 Britannia - 30th Anniversary Privy graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo (lot 1835), with a starting price of 45,000 CHF (about $50,000)
