Greysheet Catalog Details
On 26 November 1924, the government created a new currency, the quetzal (named after the national bird whose tail feathers were used as currency by the ancient Mayans), on par with the US dollar. The creation of a new national monetary symbol gave way to the founding of the Banco Central de Guatemala (Central Bank of Guatemala, BCG), with the exclusive right to issue banknotes throughout the country.
