On 19 October 1945, the government established the Jajasan Poesat Bank Indonesia (Bank Indonesia Foundation), which became the Bank Negara Indonesia (Indonesian National Bank, BNI) on 5 July 1946, occupying the offices of De Javasche Bank in Yogyakarta, the stronghold of the republic on Java.
As the NICA attempted to reassert Dutch control over the country with the introduction of so-called oeang merah (red notes) on 2 October 1945, the Republican government immediately banned the new Dutch currency. The next day it granted legal tender status to JIM and pre-war Dutch notes. It wasn’t until 26 October 1946 that the Republican government issued its own oeang putih (white money) through the BNI.
