New Zealand is known for both its unique and diverse wildlife but also for its surprising lack of native land mammals – amazingly limited to just two species of bat. For 2024, the focus is on the aquatic mammalian species of dolphin, namely that of the Māui Dolphin which is featured. Around New Zealand’s 15,000-kilometre or, 9300 mile coastline, many whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals and sea lions visit or reside in the coastal waters and on the shores of New Zealand, including around half of the world’s whale and dolphin species.

Popoto Māui Dolphins are viewed as spiritual creatures by the Māori and have become a national icon, sometimes referred to as the “kiwi of the sea”. Naturally curious and highly intelligent, pahu are coastal dwellers, not known to travel more than 20 nautical miles from shore, so they are commonly seen by swimmers, kayakers, and recreational boaters. They live in small familial pods and generally remain in one region. Unfortunately for the species, Māui dolphins are the rarest dolphin in the world. The population is estimated to be between 40 and 57 and due to the animals’ relatively short lifespans, late sexual maturity and low reproduction rates, their numbers grow by a maximum of one individual per year. Both Pahu-Hector’s dolphins, a close genetic relation and Popoto Māui dolphins are only found in the waters of New Zealand.

The silver proof and colour coins are produced by the BH Mayer’s Mint at their facilities in Munich on behalf of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. The reverse side is designed by New Zealand artist Dave Burke which includes vibrant colour printing of a Maui dolphin surfing on a representation of waves replicating the style of a kowhaiwhai pattern. Along the upper left rim is the text POPOTO MĀUI DOLPHIN along with the coins’ denomination of $5 placed just below the inscription. The obverse side includes an effigy of HM King Charles III which is the work of Stephen Fuller. The legend surrounding the portrait reads CHARLES III NEW ZEALAND. The coins’ specifications .999 Ag. 2 oz and year of issue 2024 is placed under the King’s likeness.
