Week In Review: October 19th - 23rd

This week the United States Mint announced that the final Presidential Coin & Chronicles Set, this one for Lyndon B. Johnson, will go on sale on Tuesday, October 27th starting at noon Eastern Time. This product, like its predecessors, will include a Reverse Proof Johnson Presidential dollar, a .999 fine silver medal, a stamp, and information booklet. The mintage for this set is 25,000 pieces and like the previous sets is expected so sell out quickly.

This week was an exciting one for currency collectors, especially those in the Colonial, Confederate, and Obsolete fields, with the Heritage auction of the Eric P. Newman Part VII collection. Four of the top five lots were Confederate notes, two of which were examples of the famous $500 and $1,000 Montgomery notes in wonderful states of preservation. These four lots realized a combined $209,150. The top Obsolete note in sale came, unsurprisingly, from St. Louis: a Union Bank of Missouri $100 color face proof beautifully engraved by American Banknote Company, which brought an amazing $61,690. Top Colonial lot honors went to a New Hampshire 10 shillings note from the emission of May 1st, 1761, a prohibitively rare type which garnered $18,800. The final two online-only sessions of the auction are being conducted today (Friday) and tomorrow.
