About This Series

The Asia Banking Corporation series of China Foreign Banks in the World Currency contains 18 distinct entries.
The Asia Banking Corporation (ASIA) was an American bank established in 1918, headquartered in Shanghai, with branches in Beijing, Changsha, Hankou, and Tianjin. It was organized to promote the export of American goods to China. Its capitalization was approximately $4,000,000. In its second year of business the Asia Banking Corporation severely disrupted the Shanghai market by excessive speculation in foreign exchange. Shortly thereafter the bank acquired the interests of the former Park-Union Foreign Banking Corporation (B8351). It sustained operations a few more years before merging with the National City Bank of New York in 1924. Take care not to confuse the Asia Banking Corporation with the similarly named Asiatic Banking Corporation (B6001).
